Recognising & Interpreting Body Language

CPDG recognising body language

Body language should always be read in clusters, and within the context of the situation. A single gesture rarely tells the full story, but when multiple cues align, they can reveal whether someone is feeling defensive, aggressive, closed-off, or uncomfortable.

Common patterns include; aggressive stances, (widened footing, raised chest, intense eye contact) and defensive or closed stances (crossed arms, hunched shoulders, turning slightly away).

Subtle behaviours such as pacing, yawning, fidgeting, or changes in blinking, can also offer clues about stress, anxiety, fatigue, or mental overload.

By combining posture, movement, and situational context, you can more accurately understand a person’s emotional state, and respond appropriately.
