CPDG first aid in ear acupucnture

Dealing with an unexpected event

  • You should make patients aware of the risks.
  • Patients should be asked to inform you if they feel faint, dizzy or nauseous.
  • If there is no time to get the sharps box, remove all the needles at once, and drop the needles on the floor behind the patient. (Holding the needles or putting them on the chair beside them places you or another person at risk of a needle stick injury.)
  • Lay them on the floor, chair, or treatment couch and put them into recovery position,
  • Rub Du-20 and Du-26 firmly with your thumb.
  • Reassure them that everything is OK, establish if this has ever happened before.
  • Get them a warm sugary drink or a glass of cold water.
  • First aid treatment for fainting and shock; lying down, feet and legs raised.
  • Allow them time, space, air and water to recover.
  • Retrieve the needles from the floor one at a time and dispose of them into a sharps bin, once they have fully recovered.
  • Record the incident in your accident book / incident book.
  • Wait until they fully recover.

NOTE

If this has not happened with the client before you may need to 999 / 112 and ask for an ambulance to attend to where you are.

(It may not have been the acupuncture that caused the adverse reaction.)
