About the course

This hands on practical workshop will introduce you, the participant, to the signs and symptoms that may be associated with breathing pattern disorders and hyperventilation.

It will look at the interacting influences on the body and mind that may affect breathing respiratory function, the visual and practical assessments of parts of the body associated with respiratory function, and introduce you to simple easy to learn practical breathing rehabilitation techniques, based on the work of Leon Chaitow et al.

This course will introduce you to theoretical and practical principles of;

  • Breathing pattern disorders and hyperventilation syndrome.
  • Breathing assessment techniques.
  • Assessment of additional postural muscles associated with breathing.
  • Breathing rehabilitation exercises

Participants will be able to;

  • Discuss the possible causes of breathing pattern disorders.
  • Identify the effects of over breathing.
  • Demonstrate how to assess respiratory function.
  • Demonstrate safely and effectively at least 2 functional assessments.
  • Assess safely additional postural muscles associated with breathing by performing at least 3 muscle length assessment techniques.
  • Guide a patient through at least 3 appropriate breathing relaxation techniques.
  • Immediately apply learned knowledge and techniques into your practice.

By the end of the day you should be able to;

  • Professionally and competently demonstrate how to assess respiratory function and simple breathing rehabilitation techniques.
  • Understand the bio-mechanical, psychosocial and biochemical causes of breathing pattern disorders.
  • Understand visual and practical assessments of the body.
  • Undertake muscle length testing and revision of postural muscles associated with breathing.
  • Immediately apply learned knowledge and techniques into your practice.

  • All healthcare therapists and body-workers holding a level 3 or above qualification in their modality, and Anatomy and Physiology.
  • All participants must ensure that they are in good health.
  • The course is designed to offer an opportunity to integrate new techniques into the learners practice.

  • Refreshments and lunch sadly are not provided.
  • You will need to bring a pen or pencil, we will be providing everything else; full colour course notes, all of the training equipment etc.
  • You will be formatively assessed throughout the course by the tutor, with them providing you with constructive feedback and instruction.
  • All participants must be prepared to give and receive treatments during the training, and a must be over 18 years old.
  • If you are fasting for religious or other reasons you must inform the tutor before the course commences.
