This workshop has been designed to teach you to diagnose, and locate, trigger points and their referral patterns in myofascial tissues. You will learn how to use acupuncture to deactivate trigger points, and to apply specific stretches to affected muscles, to restore a patients full range of movement.

This 1-day practical hands on workshop, is an introduction on how to treat trigger points in the neck and shoulder, using acupuncture, and will offer you both the theoretical, and practical approaches that are used in the Western style management of myofascial trigger points.

It has been uniquely produced for practicing acupuncturists, and offers an insight into the theory, and Western evidence based background, of trigger points. Practical needling sessions will be done under supervision, in a safe and stimulating environment. You will examine trigger point acupuncture techniques and practises, enhancing your professional practice and development.

You will be introduced to the basic principles and theory underpinning the principles of trigger point therapy, which was founded on the work of Travell and Simons. During the day the anatomy of muscles, muscle function and range of motion will be explored to aid in the management of myofascial trigger points.

By the end of the session you will:

  • Have developed an understanding of the basics of the western concept of pain; have refreshed and revised your understanding of the basic muscle/tendon unit, and developed an understanding of diagnosis, location of trigger points.
  • Learn how to apply appropriate needling technique to de-activate trigger points and develop an understanding of appropriate muscle stretching.
  • Have a structure for clinical reasoning that is evidence based, and current literature will be explored to review the evidence of efficacy.
  • Cover current research, patient trials, and selected case studies will be used to show how trigger point techniques may be integrated into a treatment.

By the end of the session you will be able to identify and treat the following trigger points in the muscles:

  • Trapezius – Upper Middle and Lower fibres
  • Levator Scapulae
  • Sternocleidomastoid
  • Supraspinatus
  • Infraspinatus
  • Latissimus Dosri
  • Subscapularis

The course has been uniquely devised for practising and final year therapists of all disciplines, who hold professional insurances that will cover them for the use of acupuncture within their scope of practice, and who have an interest in developing and enhancing their clinical skills.

A working knowledge of acupuncture (any particular style) is required.

As you progress through the course, your tutor will provide you with regular formative assessments. These are designed to provide you with constructive feedback, instruction, and correction in order to help you thrive on the course.

Your tutor will closely observe your progress and provide you with comprehensive assessments in a professional and supportive manner, as part of the learning process.

You will receive a CPD certificate recognised by your professional asscoaition valid for 7 hours CPD.

We send you a hard copy by post, and an e-certificate electronically for your files.

The course runs over a 1-day face-to-face clinical training day.

The total qualification / CPD time is 7 hours.

Before you attend

  • Access to the VLE element of the course is included and should be completed prior to the course
  • Due to the practical hands on nature of the course, the minimum number of participants is 6, and a maximum of 12.
  • Refreshments and lunch sadly are not provided.
  • You will need to bring a pen or pencil, we will be provide you with everything else; full colour course notes, all of the training equipment etc.
  • All participants must be prepared to give and receive treatments during the training, must be over 18 years old, and have read and completed the health screening questionnaire.
  • As a participant you must have a sound working knowledge of Acupuncture (any particular style).
  • This course may not suitable for women who are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.
  • If you are fasting for religious or other reasons you must inform the tutor before the course commences.
